Kampung Voices

Instrumentation: Sheng, Pipa, Zheng, Erhu and 12 instruments Ensemble

Duration: 10 minutes

Program Note:

“Kampung” – the Malay word for village; is something distinctive of Southeast Asia, especially Malaysia. Rain is a natural occurrence taken for granted, yet there are many stories and feelings that arise when it rains at here. “Kampung Voices”, as one can tell from the title, aims to emulate the sounds of a rainy day in the village.  The tinkling of raindrops on metal roofs of high wooden houses in Kampung or Malay village called “Rumah Tinggi”, combined with the roar of thunder and whistling of the breeze brings about a special yet intimate feeling, something close to the composer’s heart.
